Uncle, I cried. I had been asked so many times about the best home business to start that I actually developed a list of my favorite 101 home businesses. You will find it in Your Home Based Business.
It's not difficult listing 101 great home businesses -- there are literally thousands of options. The hard part is choosing "best". What does "best" really mean? The most profitable? the most enjoyable? the easiest to start? the one with the greatest potential for expansion?
Saying that the Best Home Business is the one that meets your particular set of "needs" and "wants" is really not evading the issue. It is being very honest. Assessing what you want a business to accomplish in your life is a critical step in entrepreneurship of any kind, and one that is often overlooked.
Suppose Joe wants The Most Profitable Business. Fine. But Joe also wants free time to go mountain climbing. So Joe is not going to get The Most Profitable Business. He will have to go after a profitable business that will leave him time for mountain climbing, and something that won't demand his presence every day, since he won't be there. Those exceptions add up in a hurry.
Mary may need money NOW, and Alicia may be able to wait a couple of years for income. The necessity for money is a strong determining factor in which business idea to pursue. Baby sitting will certainly get Mary money NOW, but it won't have the long term potential of Alicia's online business.
I think sometimes we ask too much of our home businesses. A home based business is a business. It is not a miracle maker. It won't likely bring riches. It won't likely bring fame. If we are lucky it will allow us to live a decent life with a decent income, and that ain't nothing to sneeze at these days.
