I literally couldn't believe my eyes. I stopped by Fashion Island in Newport Beach, a tony area, to have lunch over the weekend. I expected to see aisles of emptiness, just as I have seen every single time I've been there the past couple of months. I typically see more dogs than shopping bags.
But this time I saw real people. Young people. Old people. All walking around. And some even carried shopping bags. I was amazed. It was as though January 1 sprung open a bevy of activity upon the world. People smiled. People chatted. Children ran around. Life felt normal.
Indeed the thought crossed my mind that now is the time to promote business plans for retail businesses. Probably all kinds of businesses will start picking up again.
An associate (one who is often right) firmly believes that the American public can only be held down for so long. Then we just won't take it any more. That is really what it felt like over the weekend. I know ... one day of activity does not a boom make. But I would rather be one day UP than another day DOWN.
