Early stage venture capital firm Atlas Venture has held the final closing of its Atlas Venture VIII fund on $283m. The fund will follow its predecessors by investing in early stage technology and life sciences start-ups in the US and Europe.

Investors in Atlas Venture VIII include existing LPs including Kisco Management, The Kresge Foundation and Paul Capital; and new LPs including Franklin Park, Industriens Pensionsforsikring and Meketa Investment Group.

Jean-Francois Formela, partner at Atlas Venture, said, “The new fund is the right size for our early-stage focus and organisational structure. We feel fortunate to have a fresh pool of capital to invest at a time when we see steady innovation coupled with a return to capital efficiency. This is a good environment in which to fund new companies.”

Atlas manages over $2.5bn in capital through offices in Boston and London.
